3 Days Calving Season and Ngorongoro Safari

Overview

Departure & Return Location: Arusha Town
Departure Time: 8:00 AM

Experience one of Tanzania’s most spectacular wildlife seasons on this 3 Days Calving Season and Ngorongoro Safari, designed to take you into the heart of the Southern Serengeti and the Ngorongoro ecosystem.

During the calving season, the plains around the Ndutu area become a remarkable nursery for thousands of wildebeest calves, attracting large numbers of predators including lions, cheetahs and hyenas. This short safari combines the excitement of the calving season with a memorable wildlife experience in the magnificent Ngorongoro Crater, making it an ideal choice for travelers with limited time who want to experience Tanzania’s wildlife at one of its most dramatic times of the year.

Tour Plan

Day 01: Arusha – Ngorongoro Conservation Area – Ndutu Area

Distance: Approximately 240 km
Non-game viewing time: 4–5 hrs

After breakfast, depart from Arusha and drive towards the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, continuing towards the Ndutu area in the Southern Serengeti.

The journey takes you through the scenic landscapes of northern Tanzania, including the fertile highlands around Karatu and the spectacular Ngorongoro Conservation Area. As you continue towards Ndutu, the landscape gradually changes into wide open plains that become the center of the Great Migration during the calving season.

Upon arrival in the Ndutu area, begin an afternoon game drive. During the calving season, thousands of wildebeest gather across the short-grass plains to give birth to their young. The abundance of newborn calves also attracts predators, creating excellent opportunities to observe lions, cheetahs, hyenas and other wildlife.

As the sun begins to set, drive to your accommodation for dinner and overnight.

• MEALS: Lunch & Dinner
• ACCOMMODATION: Tented Camp / Midrange Lodge

After an early breakfast, spend a full day exploring the Ndutu area, one of the most exciting locations to experience the Great Migration during the calving season.

The day will be dedicated to extensive game drives across the Southern Serengeti and surrounding Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Your experienced safari guide will help you locate concentrations of wildebeest, zebras and other migrating herbivores.

One of the highlights of this season is witnessing newborn wildebeest calves taking their first steps and learning to move with the herds. The large concentration of prey also creates opportunities to observe predators hunting or monitoring the herds.

Depending on wildlife movements and road conditions, your guide will choose the best areas for game viewing. You may encounter lions, cheetahs, hyenas, jackals, giraffes, elephants, gazelles and many bird species.

Enjoy a picnic lunch in the wilderness before continuing with the afternoon game drive.

Later in the afternoon, return to your accommodation for dinner and overnight.

After an early breakfast, depart towards Lake Eyasi, home to one of Tanzania’s most distinctive indigenous cultural experiences.

Today you will spend time with the Hadzabe, an indigenous hunter-gatherer community whose traditional lifestyle has remained closely connected to the natural environment. The Ngorongoro Conservation Area identifies the Hadzabe as one of the distinctive indigenous communities living around the Lake Eyasi area.

With the assistance of a local Hadzabe guide, learn about traditional hunting and gathering techniques, tracking, indigenous knowledge of plants and the natural environment, food gathering and the community’s traditional way of life.

You will also have the opportunity to learn about the Hadzabe language, social traditions and their close relationship with the surrounding landscape.
