From the multicultural community of Mto wa Mbu to the traditional way of life of the Maasai, the unique hunter-gatherer heritage of the Hadzabe and the craftsmanship of the Datoga people, this journey offers meaningful encounters with some of Tanzania’s most fascinating communities.
Throughout the safari, you will have opportunities to walk through local villages, visit farms and traditional homes, learn about indigenous knowledge, experience traditional food and crafts, and interact with local communities in a respectful and authentic way.
Tour Plan
Day 01: Arusha – Mto wa Mbu Cultural Experience
Distance: Approximately 120 km
Non-cultural/travel time: 2–3 hrs
After breakfast, depart from Arusha and drive towards Mto wa Mbu, a vibrant cultural community located near Lake Manyara and the Great Rift Valley. The area is well known for its cultural diversity, agriculture and community-based tourism experiences.
Upon arrival, begin a guided village walking tour through the local community. You will visit farms, interact with local farmers and artisans, and learn about traditional agriculture and everyday village life. Depending on the day’s program, you may also visit local craft workshops and a traditional market.
Enjoy a traditional Tanzanian lunch prepared using locally available ingredients. In the afternoon, continue with a cultural experience involving local food preparation, traditional crafts and interaction with community members.
Late afternoon, return to your accommodation for dinner and overnight.

Day 02: Mto wa Mbu – Maasai Cultural Experience – Karatu
Distance: Approximately 80–100 km
After breakfast, depart for a Maasai cultural experience. You will visit a traditional Maasai Boma where you will learn about the Maasai way of life, pastoral traditions, family structures, livestock keeping and the importance of cattle within Maasai society.
Your local cultural guide will introduce you to traditional Maasai homes and explain how the community has preserved its traditions while adapting to modern life. You will also have the opportunity to learn about traditional beadwork, clothing and handicrafts.
Enjoy a cultural performance featuring traditional songs and dances, and take time to interact with community members and learn about their daily activities.
After lunch, continue towards the Karatu area through the scenic landscapes of northern Tanzania. Arrive at your accommodation in the evening for dinner and overnight.

Day 03: Karatu – Lake Eyasi – Hadzabe Cultural Experience
Distance: Approximately 90 km
After an early breakfast, depart towards Lake Eyasi, home to one of Tanzania’s most distinctive indigenous cultural experiences.
Today you will spend time with the Hadzabe, an indigenous hunter-gatherer community whose traditional lifestyle has remained closely connected to the natural environment. The Ngorongoro Conservation Area identifies the Hadzabe as one of the distinctive indigenous communities living around the Lake Eyasi area.
With the assistance of a local Hadzabe guide, learn about traditional hunting and gathering techniques, tracking, indigenous knowledge of plants and the natural environment, food gathering and the community’s traditional way of life.
You will also have the opportunity to learn about the Hadzabe language, social traditions and their close relationship with the surrounding landscape.
After the cultural experience, enjoy lunch before continuing to your accommodation near Lake Eyasi.
Spend the evening relaxing and enjoying the peaceful surroundings of the area.

Day 04: Lake Eyasi – Datoga Cultural Experience – Mto wa Mbu
Distance: Approximately 120 km
After breakfast, continue your cultural journey with a visit to the Datoga community, traditionally known for pastoralism and skilled metalworking.
Visit a local Datoga community and learn about their traditional lifestyle, livestock keeping, family traditions and craftsmanship. One of the highlights is a visit to local blacksmiths, where you can observe traditional metalworking techniques used to produce tools, household items and ornaments.
Your guide will explain how these skills have been passed from one generation to another and their importance within the community.
After the cultural experience, enjoy lunch before beginning your journey back towards Mto wa Mbu.
On arrival, spend the evening relaxing at your accommodation and reflecting on the diverse cultural experiences of the safari.

Day 05: Mto wa Mbu – Local Food, Art & Arusha
Distance: Approximately 120 km
After breakfast, enjoy your final cultural experience in Mto wa Mbu. Take a relaxed walk through the village and discover more about local agriculture, traditional food, arts and crafts.
You may participate in a local cooking experience where you learn how traditional Tanzanian dishes are prepared using locally grown ingredients. Mto wa Mbu offers several community-based activities including village walks, farm visits, local food experiences, Maasai visits, markets and craft-related activities.
After lunch, begin your drive back to Arusha. Along the way, enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Great Rift Valley and northern Tanzania.
Arrive in Arusha in the late afternoon, marking the end of your 5 Days Tribes Cultural Safari.
